Spike Jonze: Where The Wild Things Are

Posted by Jonathan On December - 12 - 2009

where_the_wild_things_areSpike Jonze sits on a chair with his knees drawn up around his chin. He’s wearing a jacket and tie, his shirt is hanging out and he’s rocking sneakers. He’s been speaking to journalists for three days. He knows all the questions by heart now. What were you like as a child? When did you first read Where the Wild Things are? Will you tell us about the film’s troubled five-year production? He doesn’t know this is not going to be that kind of interview. Read the rest of this entry »

Film review: (500) Days Of Summer

Posted by Jonathan On December - 10 - 2009

500-daysBoy meets girl. Boy falls in love. Girl doesn’t. That bitter twist to the indie rom-com formula is what gives (500) Days of Summer such a surprising emotional kick. Surprising, because the set-up is what-evah: Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is a greetings-card writer who thinks The Graduate has a happy ending, Summer (Zooey Deschanel) is the carefree new-girl-in-the-office who breezes away with his heart. 30 Blu-rays You Must Own

Posted by Jonathan On December - 9 - 2009

planetearth1. Planet Earth
Shot on HD cameras and a £16 million budget, David Attenborough’s nature mega-doc might be Blu-ray’s most breathtaking visual experience: every colour, every hair, every tiny air-bubble and fish-scale leaps off the screen and hits your retinas like a drug.

2. Iron Man
Impossible to see where the CG starts and the live-action footage ends on Iron’s Man’s HD transfer. But it’s the lossless Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio that really amazes: skip to Tony Stark’s first flight and feel your surround-sound ripple. Read the rest of this entry »

Talking Movies… James Cameron

Posted by Jonathan On December - 8 - 2009

james-cameron1. Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981)

“I was hired by a very unscrupulous producer. He put me with an Italian crew who spoke no English, then fired me a couple of weeks into the shoot and took over directing. Turns out, he’d done that on his two previous films. He wouldn’t show me a foot of film that I’d shot, so I went in and ran the film for myself. I made a few changes – I don’t know if the editor ever noticed – and it was fine. So I thought, ‘I actually can do this. I just fell in with a pack of thieves and whackos.’ Read the rest of this entry »

Penelope Cruz: Nine

Posted by Jonathan On December - 7 - 2009

penelope_cruzYou’re pretty excited about Nine… How come?

Singing and dancing! I was a student of dance for many years, but Nine is the first time that I sing in a movie and the first time that I do a musical. I love the character. I saw it in Broadway. I can’t believe I got this role. I did five castings to get the movie – because of the dancing and the singing. It was a lot of fun, but it was scary also. Read the rest of this entry »

The Coen brothers: A Serious Man

Posted by Jonathan On December - 6 - 2009

coensJoel is taller, wears dark suits. Ethan is shorter, dresses down. Joel looks over to your left shoulder while he’s talking. Ethan looks over to your right shoulder. Sometimes they’ll interrupt each other. Sometimes they’ll finish each other’s sentences. They’re, y’know, kinda funny lookin’. No one really understands the Coen brothers or their movies. But everyone loves them. Their latest movie is called A Serious Man. It’s about… well, try asking them. Read the rest of this entry »

Patrick Swayze: Peaceful Warrior

Posted by Jonathan On December - 5 - 2009

patrick swayzeRemembering an actor with all the right moves…

They bullied Patrick Wayne Swayze at school. While other young Texas dudes were shotgunning beers and swapping punches, he was perfecting his brisé and chassé. “I had to fight my way up from the days I was little,” remembers Swayze, who was shoved face-first into ballet by his mother, a dance tutor who would choreograph Urban Cowboy. As soon as he could walk, Swayze could dance. And the bullies learnt fast - he could do beer and bruises too. Read the rest of this entry »
