Top 20: War Movies

Posted by Jonathan On April - 19 - 2010

War, everyone seems to agree, is hell. War movies on the other hand? Brilliant. Whether you’re leaping a stolen Nazi motorcycle over a fence, machine-gunning your way through the trenches or blowing up a massive bridge you’ve just built for the Japanese, they’re a thrilling emotional battlefield of horror, heartbreak, action and adventure. “God is not on the side of the big battalions,” quipped Voltaire, “but on the side of those who shoot best.” We’re with the Big Man on that one. Here are 20 war movies that really hit the bull’s eye… Read the rest of this entry »

How To Survive A Horror Movie

Posted by Jonathan On April - 11 - 2010

1. Don’t go out there (or in here)

The basement, the attic, the closet, the garage, that alley, those woods… Just. Don’t. Doesn’t matter if you heard a noise. Doesn’t matter if the generator just broke. You go to investigate something that’s ‘not quite right’, you’re dead meat. Wait till morning. If it’s still night-time it’s still dangerous.

As seen in: Evil Dead 2

Kick-Ass: Have-A-Go Heroes

Posted by Jonathan On April - 2 - 2010

As he touched the cold trigger of his handgun, Nicolas Cage paused to contemplate what he was about to do. Stood smiling in the middle of his gun sights was a tiny, blonde, button-cute 12-year-old girl. His daughter, in fact. Suddenly, eating a live cockroach didn’t seem so bad. ‘We really have to make it clear there’s a bullet-proof vest underneath there,’ he thought nervously to himself, as he smiled reassuringly back at her. ‘This is a weird day… A very weird day.’ He squeezed the trigger. Top 10: Chinese Restaurant Fights

Posted by Jonathan On March - 21 - 2010

1. Year Of The Dragon

One of Tarantino’s favourite films. The Deer Hunter director Michael Cimino’s Chinatown cop thriller explodes when Uzi-toting gunmen storm a fancy restaurant and douse it with hot lead: glass shatters, giant fish tanks burst, waiters crash over tables, a giant chandelier comes smashing down, diners topple down stairs… Mickey Rourke’s date is ruined. No wonder it inspired Kill Bill’s House Of Blue Leaves showdown. WATCH IT NOW!

The Wolfman: Why The Big Paws?

Posted by Jonathan On January - 31 - 2010

wolfmanThings we know about werewolves: they go to the gym a lot, they take their shirts off when it starts raining, they transform when girls don’t fancy them, they’re Native Americans, they’re made of pixels, they’re really, really bad at acting.

Let’s start again. Back in 1941, back before New Moon and Taylor Lauter, The Wolf Man and Lon Chaney clawed out the real template for the modern movie lycanthrope. Read the rest of this entry »

Jonathan Crocker’s Top 10 Films Of 2009

Posted by Jonathan On December - 30 - 2009

fish-tank-katie1. Fish Tank

Powerful, punishing, funny, beautifully observed… Way too easy to lob adjectives at Brit writer/director Andrea Arnold’s superb second movie. The film you probably missed this year is the film you can’t afford to.

Michael Haneke: The White Ribbon

Posted by Jonathan On December - 26 - 2009

hanekeBlack and white! Bleak as winter! Starring no one you’ve ever heard of! Subtitled! Nearly three hours long! Sort of about the war but doesn’t actually have any war in it! Few films this year will be as head-smackingly uncommercial as the latest from Austrian arthouse giant Michael Haneke. Why head-smacking? Because few will be better. Read the rest of this entry »

James Cameron: Avatar

Posted by Jonathan On December - 21 - 2009

Avatar-Navi

Just after he finished making True Lies, James Cameron picked up the phone and called Stanley Kubrick. They spend a day together watching Cameron’s film in the basement of the house in the English countryside where Kubrick was now a virtual hermit. Kubrick was fascinated by Cameron’s effects shots, wanted to know exactly how he’d hung a man on the missile of a harrier jump-jet and fired him through a skyscraper. Cameron must have been thrilled. He’d finally returned the favour. Read the rest of this entry »

Talking Movies… Judd Apatow

judd-apatow-movies1. The Cable Guy (1996)

“The Cable Guy is still one of my favourite films that I’ve worked on and it never ceases to make me laugh. I must say, however, the rough critical reaction made me doubt my instincts and sense of humour. If you email me, I will send you a list of every good review that movie got. Almost 20 percent of the reviews were good, not that I’m counting. I didn’t make another movie for eight years. Read the rest of this entry »

Talking Movies… James Cameron

Posted by Jonathan On December - 8 - 2009

james-cameron1. Piranha Part Two: The Spawning (1981)

“I was hired by a very unscrupulous producer. He put me with an Italian crew who spoke no English, then fired me a couple of weeks into the shoot and took over directing. Turns out, he’d done that on his two previous films. He wouldn’t show me a foot of film that I’d shot, so I went in and ran the film for myself. I made a few changes – I don’t know if the editor ever noticed – and it was fine. So I thought, ‘I actually can do this. I just fell in with a pack of thieves and whackos.’ Read the rest of this entry »
