Larry David: Whatever Works

Posted by Jonathan On July - 10 - 2010

Is Woody Allen a hero of yours?

Yes, he’s an idol. For sure. Maybe, one of my few.

Woody has a lot of female muses. Do you?

I think my only muse is my mother. Her voice is the most accessible to me in my life. I can hear her screaming at me many times during the day. ‘LARRY! PUT A JACKET ON! WHAT ARE YOU DOING? WHAT, YOU’RE GOING OUT IN THIS, IN THIS WEATHER WITHOUT A JACKET?’ Read the rest of this entry »

Jake Gyllenhaal: Prince Of Persia

Posted by Jonathan On June - 2 - 2010

Do people still struggle with your surname?

Oh, definitely, man. Yeah, that’s like my favourite thing ever: the many mispronunciations of the name Gyllenhaal. Gill-en-hale, Gyle-en-hall, Gyle-en-hale. Particularly when somebody does know what you’ve done and they’re like, ‘YOU’RE JAKE GALLILIANHOOL! Yeah? Oh, I love your work!’

Does it bother you?

No, I forgive them. It’s an absurd last name. It’s Swedish. Read the rest of this entry »

Jean-Claude Van Damme: JCVD

Posted by Jonathan On May - 31 - 2010

“Maybe this is going to be one of your best interviews,” says Jean-Claude Van Damme, on a shaky phone line from Hong Kong. Well, why not? There’s a hell of a lot to talk about. His rivalry with ponytailed face-smasher Steven Segal. The time he blinded a stuntman by sticking a thumb in his eye. The time he got an erection on TV. And, mostly, his comeback from career-death in one of the coolest indie movies of 2008. Part comedy, part biopic, part heist movie, JCVD hands Van Damme the most complex and fascinating role of his career: himself. Read the rest of this entry »

Matthew Vaughn: Kick-Ass

Posted by Jonathan On April - 3 - 2010

How did Brad Pitt help make Kick-Ass happen?

I sent the script to Brad because I wanted him to play Big Daddy. He loved the script but he was just signing on to Inglourious Basterds. And he said, ‘I really like it, anything I can do to help?’ I said, ‘Well, I could really do with an American producer on this one just to help guide me.’ So he came on board. Mark Millar: Kick-Ass

Posted by Jonathan On April - 2 - 2010

What’s this talk that you wanted Big Daddy to be a paedophile?

This is bollocks, right. Where did this come from? Did Vaughn say this? He actually just doing this to piss me off! I never said that. What I suggested was I wanted Big Daddy to have a twist to it that wasn’t just as simple as him being a cop. One of the things I suggested was that he maybe kidnapped Cindy. But Vaughn has somehow turned that into making him a paedo. Read the rest of this entry »

Olga Kurylenko: Centurion

Posted by Jonathan On March - 25 - 2010

How many Bond girls write letters to Lars von Trier? Only one. Only the best one, apparently. “Oh, I’ve been tracking him,” laughs Olga Kurylenko, mischievously. And what exactly did she write to the bad-boy Danish depressive? “I can’t say… But I did get an answer,” she smiles. Von Trier sent her a photo of himself. He’d signed it, ‘To the best Bond babe.’ “That picture is on my wall,” says Kurylenko. “He must work with me. He doesn’t know what he missing out on…” Read the rest of this entry »

Martin Scorsese: Shutter Island

Posted by Jonathan On March - 22 - 2010

Can we ask you some questions about New York?

Try, I don’t know that much about the city. From my house, they put me in a car and I go to the editing room. I don’t see much of it except a few blocks. I don’t know anything else. I see some people go by in the street sometimes. But I’ve always been there. I was born there, I was raised there, so… Okay, okay, let’s see how we get on. Read the rest of this entry »

Benicio del Toro: The Wolfman

Posted by Jonathan On February - 18 - 2010

benicio_del_toroIt’s your birthday tomorrow, right?

That’s right. I’ll be 43.

How does that feel?

Couldn’t tell the difference.

Aren’t you going to celebrate?

I’m not too keen on birthdays. Never was when I was a kid. I always got shy about that cake and the candles. Read the rest of this entry »

Mariah Carey: Precious

Posted by Jonathan On February - 12 - 2010

mariah-carey-preciousDoes Glitter feel like a long time ago now?

So why are we still talking about it? Here’s the thing that a lot of people don’t know. Glitter was released on 9/11. Could there be a worse day for that movie to come out? I don’t think so. I don’t even know that many people saws the movie. I don’t think it’s the worst thing ever done. I don’t think it’s best thing ever done. If I could go back in time and not do it, yes, I would definitely not do it. Read the rest of this entry »

Michael Haneke: The White Ribbon

Posted by Jonathan On December - 26 - 2009

hanekeBlack and white! Bleak as winter! Starring no one you’ve ever heard of! Subtitled! Nearly three hours long! Sort of about the war but doesn’t actually have any war in it! Few films this year will be as head-smackingly uncommercial as the latest from Austrian arthouse giant Michael Haneke. Why head-smacking? Because few will be better. Read the rest of this entry »
