James Cameron: Avatar

Posted by Jonathan On December - 21 - 2009

Just after he finished making True Lies, James Cameron picked up the phone and called Stanley Kubrick. They spend a day together watching Cameron’s film in the basement of the house in the English countryside where Kubrick was now a virtual hermit. Kubrick was fascinated by Cameron’s effects shots, wanted to know exactly how he’d hung a man on the missile of a harrier jump-jet and fired him through a skyscraper. Cameron must have been thrilled. He’d finally returned the favour. Read the rest of this entry »

Spike Jonze: Where The Wild Things Are

Posted by Jonathan On December - 12 - 2009

where_the_wild_things_areSpike Jonze sits on a chair with his knees drawn up around his chin. He’s wearing a jacket and tie, his shirt is hanging out and he’s rocking sneakers. He’s been speaking to journalists for three days. He knows all the questions by heart now. What were you like as a child? When did you first read Where the Wild Things are? Will you tell us about the film’s troubled five-year production? He doesn’t know this is not going to be that kind of interview. Read the rest of this entry »

Penelope Cruz: Nine

Posted by Jonathan On December - 7 - 2009

penelope_cruzYou’re pretty excited about Nine… How come?

Singing and dancing! I was a student of dance for many years, but Nine is the first time that I sing in a movie and the first time that I do a musical. I love the character. I saw it in Broadway. I can’t believe I got this role. I did five castings to get the movie – because of the dancing and the singing. It was a lot of fun, but it was scary also. Read the rest of this entry »

The Coen brothers: A Serious Man

Posted by Jonathan On December - 6 - 2009

coensJoel is taller, wears dark suits. Ethan is shorter, dresses down. Joel looks over to your left shoulder while he’s talking. Ethan looks over to your right shoulder. Sometimes they’ll interrupt each other. Sometimes they’ll finish each other’s sentences. They’re, y’know, kinda funny lookin’. No one really understands the Coen brothers or their movies. But everyone loves them. Their latest movie is called A Serious Man. It’s about… well, try asking them. Read the rest of this entry »

Terry Gilliam: The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus

Posted by Jonathan On November - 22 - 2009

terry-gilliamHeath Ledger is dead. He’s hanging from a noose under a London bridge. And Terry Gilliam put him there.

That shocking first glimpse of the 27-year-old actor’s last ever screen appearance in Gilliam’s The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus sent a shiver of electricity through the air when the film debuted at Cannes 2009. Of course, Ledger was very much alive when Gilliam shot the scene – as was Parnassus itself. Read the rest of this entry »

Lars von Trier: Antichrist

Posted by Jonathan On July - 15 - 2009

To hell and back with the Danish bad-boy’s most controversial film…

Lars von Trier opens the fridge and lifts out a beer. “I think you should have one,” he says, handing over a bottle as we take an armchair opposite him. “I really think you should.”

Perching on a well-worn sofa, von Trier looks at the cosy clutter around his room. Big TV, piles of papers, PS3 still in the box. “And this is the deer that I shot,” says the director. A deer’s head hangs on the wall. The deer does not look like it’s forgiven him. Read the rest of this entry »

Stephen Dorff

Posted by Jonathan On July - 12 - 2009

stephendorffYou’re suddenly starring in big movies for Michael Mann, Adam Sandler, Sofia Coppola and American History X director Tony Kaye. Does it feel like you’re on the brink of a real comeback?

Yeah, I mean… A couple of years ago, I wasn’t getting the films I wanted. And then I did this prison movie called Felon that was received pretty incredibly. I was like, this is weird for me. A movie that everybody seems to like! This is kinda cool! I suddenly started getting offered all these movies. Read the rest of this entry »

Tilda Swinton: Julia

Posted by Jonathan On June - 3 - 2009

tilda_swintonEven she can’t believe it. “Is it? Wow…” Definitely. “Although on the other hand, it feels about 10.” More like five. “Yeah… But maybe five.” It’s definitely five, five years since Tilda Swinton last stared into an i-D camera. Back then, back in 2003, we celebrated her as Britain’s most unique icon of avant garde style: actress, artist, mother, model. The rest of the world has finally caught on. Bryan Singer: Magneto and Supes 2?

Posted by Jonathan On June - 3 - 2009

bryansingerSomeone broke Bryan Singer’s heart. He was 16, just a boy from New Jersey. They were much older, from way out of town. He still hasn’t recovered. He still hasn’t forgotten. “Maybe because I was an only child and I was always looking for that kind of thing,” he remembers. “I was completely blown away by ET. Absolute genius…” Read the rest of this entry »

Zoe Saldana: Star Trek

Posted by Jonathan On May - 29 - 2009

zoesaldanaShe’s playing a Star Trek sex symbol and a 3D alien. But Zoe Saldana says it’s okay to be a geek…

You’re in Star Trek. So you’re a geek, right?
I am actually! I’m very proud to say I am a geek. But I’m kind of a cool geek. I grew up in a very sci-fi home so I’ve seen a lot of sci-fi movies, from Dune to Alien, 2001, ET, Batteries Not Included… All these films I go crazy for. But never Star Trek. Read the rest of this entry »
