Film review: The Adjustment Bureau

Posted by Jonathan On March - 2 - 2011

Love has taken a battering lately. Blue Valentine, Rabbit Hole and The Kids Are All Right have all shown it busting up, breaking down and dying hard. Love’s had it tough. Love’s had Twilight, for pity’s sake. But things weren’t always like this. Read the rest of this entry »

The Wolfman: Why The Big Paws?

Posted by Jonathan On January - 31 - 2010

wolfmanThings we know about werewolves: they go to the gym a lot, they take their shirts off when it starts raining, they transform when girls don’t fancy them, they’re Native Americans, they’re made of pixels, they’re really, really bad at acting.

Let’s start again. Back in 1941, back before New Moon and Taylor Lauter, The Wolf Man and Lon Chaney clawed out the real template for the modern movie lycanthrope. Read the rest of this entry »

30 Blu-rays You Must Own

Posted by Jonathan On December - 9 - 2009

planetearth1. Planet Earth
Shot on HD cameras and a £16 million budget, David Attenborough’s nature mega-doc might be Blu-ray’s most breathtaking visual experience: every colour, every hair, every tiny air-bubble and fish-scale leaps off the screen and hits your retinas like a drug.

Hell, he even refused a screentest. Read the rest of this entry »

DVD review: The Bourne Supremacy

Posted by Jonathan On December - 18 - 2004

bournesupResurrecting the raw, urgent realism of Doug Liman’s original anti-thriller, Brit director Paul Greengrass puts Matt Damon’s amnesiac assassin back in the crosshairs. Only this time, framed for murder by the CIA, it’s Bourne’s turn to play the hunter. Read the rest of this entry »

DVD review: The Bourne Identity SE

Posted by Jonathan On June - 18 - 2003

bourneidentityWhen Jason Bourne was first hooked out of the Mediterranean sea with bullet-holes in his body and plot-holes in his brain, few would have wagered that a) Matt Damon could convince as an amnesiac action-man and b) that The Bourne Identity could convince as a sleek spy thriller. But convince they do, with blistering unarmed combat, screeching chases and moral mugginess unfolding against a vivid European backdrop. Read the rest of this entry »
