Film review: Transformers

Posted by Jonathan On January - 11 - 2011

Crashing in as a 10-tonne metaphor, Michael Bay’s deafening mega-blockbuster sees humanity attacked by a destructive new super-technology. Well, quite. Yawping a stunning new age for digital animation, Hasbro’s 60ft alien robots transform from helicopters and hi-fis in a seamless spectacle of hydraulic crank and whir, as the evil Decepticons battle the heroic Autobots for mankind’s future. Cue the in-built irony: in Bay’s world, moving parts aren’t for the actors. Read the rest of this entry »

Simon Pegg: Nerd Do Well

Posted by Jonathan On October - 15 - 2010

Is there anything controversial in your new autobiography?

No, not really. I mean, there’s whole thing about Meredith Catsanus… I’m sure that particular girl wouldn’t have minded me telling the story.

Go on…

I kind of say, ‘This isn’t going to be a tell-all. I’m not going to talk about my first sexual experience.’ But then I do, about touching this girl’s boobs. And I didn’t want to name her. I do name a lot of friends from childhood – because I didn’t touch their boobs. Read the rest of this entry »

Top 20: War Movies

Posted by Jonathan On April - 19 - 2010

War, everyone seems to agree, is hell. War movies on the other hand? Brilliant. Whether you’re leaping a stolen Nazi motorcycle over a fence, machine-gunning your way through the trenches or blowing up a massive bridge you’ve just built for the Japanese, they’re a thrilling emotional battlefield of horror, heartbreak, action and adventure. “God is not on the side of the big battalions,” quipped Voltaire, “but on the side of those who shoot best.” We’re with the Big Man on that one. Here are 20 war movies that really hit the bull’s eye… Read the rest of this entry »

James Cameron: Avatar

Posted by Jonathan On December - 21 - 2009

Avatar-Navi

Just after he finished making True Lies, James Cameron picked up the phone and called Stanley Kubrick. They spend a day together watching Cameron’s film in the basement of the house in the English countryside where Kubrick was now a virtual hermit. Kubrick was fascinated by Cameron’s effects shots, wanted to know exactly how he’d hung a man on the missile of a harrier jump-jet and fired him through a skyscraper. Cameron must have been thrilled. He’d finally returned the favour. Read the rest of this entry »

tron1The full story behind the most influential CG movie ever made…

Wyatt Earp was puzzled. Sitting on a horse in the middle of the hot Arizona desert, he scratched his huge handlebar moustache. nfrost1Soaring from Spaced to Spielberg: on board with the star of The Boat That Rocked and Tintin…

What are you up to in The Boat That Rocked?

Well, I play the part of Dr Dave. He’s not a doctor. He’s a DJ. And he doesn’t have a surname. Maybe Dave is his surname. He’s a bit of a north-sea swordsman, so to speak. Read the rest of this entry »
