Film review: Avengers Assemble

Posted by Jonathan On April - 29 - 2012

What do you get if you cross a Norse god-king with an ego the size of a planet, a nervy science boffin with gigantic anger issues, a WWII super-soldier with a very silly costume and a genius billionaire playboy with flying power-armour? Arguments, that’s what.

With great power comes great banter in writer/director Joss Whedon’s blockbuster multiplier, which isn’t the best superhero movie ever – but might well be the funniest. Read the rest of this entry »

Film review: Eat Pray Love

Posted by Jonathan On September - 24 - 2010

If you watch Eat Pray Love with your brain switched on and two eyes open, there’s plenty to turn your stomach. Bon appetite: wealthy, beautiful, successful woman (Julia Roberts) with handsome, loving husband (poor Billy Crudup) decides it’s just not good enough and chucks it all away. She instantly and inexplicably pulls hottie toy-boy James Franco. Then chucks him. Then flounces round the world, doing nothing except eating delicious food in gorgeous countries. Feel sick yet? We’re not done. Read the rest of this entry »

Adam Sandler: Funny How?

Posted by Jonathan On September - 13 - 2010

When asked to speak at a convention of cinema-owners in Las Vegas, the star of Big Daddy and Little Nicky addressed the crowd with the following words: “My name is Adam Sandler. I’m not particularly talented. I’m not particularly good-looking. And yet I’m a multi-millionaire.” Everyone laughed. Read the rest of this entry »

Film review: Scott Pilgrim Vs The World

Posted by Jonathan On August - 14 - 2010

Scott Pilgrim is a weakling, socially awkward, doesn’t drink, rarely gets a haircut, only wears his favourite T-shirts. If you just read your own bio, this is your new favourite movie. Adapted from Brian O’Malley’s comic-book saga with breakneck stylistic verve by director Edgar Wright, Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is the ultimate geek wish-fulfilment flick. Top 10: Fight Films

Posted by Jonathan On August - 8 - 2010

1. The Legend Of The Drunken Master

Masterpiece. Playing a man who’s unstoppable when he’s had a skinful of booze (you know the feeling), Jackie Chan wallops home an amazing one-two combo of comedy and kung fu. The climactic eight-minute sequence is one of the most thrilling, inventive and outrageous pieces of fight choreography ever filmed. Once you’ve watched Chan crawling through a bed of hot-coals for a few seconds of slapstick fun, you realise why his physical abilities burnt out so fast. Right here, he’s on fire. Top 10: Chinese Restaurant Fights

Posted by Jonathan On March - 21 - 2010

1. Year Of The Dragon

One of Tarantino’s favourite films. The Deer Hunter director Michael Cimino’s Chinatown cop thriller explodes when Uzi-toting gunmen storm a fancy restaurant and douse it with hot lead: glass shatters, giant fish tanks burst, waiters crash over tables, a giant chandelier comes smashing down, diners topple down stairs… Mickey Rourke’s date is ruined. No wonder it inspired Kill Bill’s House Of Blue Leaves showdown. WATCH IT NOW!

Ron Jeremy: My Secret Hollywood Career

1. Ghostbusters (1984)

“I was the janitor of the firehouse where the whole thing takes place. I get slimed! A lot of magazines all over the world printed the scene where I’m looking up in the air when the slime comes down. I loved getting slimed! I spent a couple of days on it with Bill Murray and the whole cast. They all knew who I was. Read the rest of this entry »

Film review: Inglourious Basterds

Posted by Jonathan On May - 22 - 2009

inglourious-basterdsOnce upon a time… in Nazi-occupied France. After an eternity of hype and faff, Quentin Tarantino’s war romper Inglourious Basterds was finally locked, loaded and unleashed on Cannes 2009. Right from that ‘Allo ‘Allo title-spelling, QT proves that a film about a crack unit of Jewish-American soldiers who love scalping Nazis just can’t be bad. Read the rest of this entry »

“My (In)glorious Bastards!”

Posted by Jonathan On August - 14 - 2008

ingloriousbastardsWith Tarantino remaking WWII actioner Inglourious Basterds, original director Enzo Mascarelli remembers how it all began…

Guns. Lots of guns. That was the one thing director Enzo Mascarelli didn’t have while filming WWII actioner Inglorious Bastards in 1978. “A strange law in the Italian government at the time has just decided to remove all firearms from the movies,” recalls Mascarelli. “So they took all our guns – crazy! It’s not easy to do a war movie without weapons! After they went, everyone was saying, ‘Bastards! Bastards! Bastards!’ And I just said, ‘Inglorious bastards!’ And everyone said, ‘That’s it! That’s the title of the movie!’ And these guys are just a bunch of bastards. I’m still very proud of that.” Read the rest of this entry »

Cannes 2008: Tarantino On Tarantino

Posted by Jonathan On June - 28 - 2008

tarantino1He’s the worst advert for film school ever. Quentin Tarantino didn’t go. In fact, he didn’t bother much with school at all. Quitting high-school at 16 – the age his mother was when she gave birth to him – young Quentin watched movies instead. After all, what could he learn that Hawks, De Palma and Leone couldn’t teach him? Read the rest of this entry »
