Billy Bob Thornton: Faster

Posted by Jonathan On February - 8 - 2011

There’s a story that Billy Wilder (legendary Oscar-winning filmmaker) once told Billy Bob Thornton (impoverished LA waiter) that he didn’t look pretty enough to make it as an actor. Thornton didn’t care. Firstly, he didn’t really want to be an actor anyway. Secondly, he looked interesting. And interesting beat pretty any day of the week. The first Billy would live just long enough to watch the second Billy (actor, writer, director) win an Oscar and marry the hottest woman on the planet. Read the rest of this entry »

Simon Pegg: Nerd Do Well

Posted by Jonathan On October - 15 - 2010

Is there anything controversial in your new autobiography?

No, not really. I mean, there’s whole thing about Meredith Catsanus… I’m sure that particular girl wouldn’t have minded me telling the story.

Go on…

I kind of say, ‘This isn’t going to be a tell-all. I’m not going to talk about my first sexual experience.’ But then I do, about touching this girl’s boobs. And I didn’t want to name her. I do name a lot of friends from childhood – because I didn’t touch their boobs. Read the rest of this entry »

Adam Sandler: Funny How?

Posted by Jonathan On September - 13 - 2010

When asked to speak at a convention of cinema-owners in Las Vegas, the star of Big Daddy and Little Nicky addressed the crowd with the following words: “My name is Adam Sandler. I’m not particularly talented. I’m not particularly good-looking. And yet I’m a multi-millionaire.” Everyone laughed. Read the rest of this entry »

The REAL Movie Stars

Posted by Jonathan On June - 7 - 2010

1. The real… Rocky Balboa

It ain’t how hard you can hit… Sly Stallone based Rocky Balboa on no-hope heavyweight slugger Chuck Wepner after seeing him battle invincible world champion Muhammad Ali in an extraordinary fight in 1975. No one expected Wepner to last three rounds. But he took everything Ali could throw – then floored the champ with a bodyshot in the ninth. “Hey, I knocked him down!” grinned Wepner as he went back to his corner. “Well done,” replied his trainer. “But he looks really pissed off now…” Read the rest of this entry »

Prince Of Persia: Dangerous Game?

Posted by Jonathan On May - 19 - 2010

“I’ve seen the movie. It’s fantastic,” says Prince Of Persia’s star Jake Gyllenhaal. His director Mike Newell is even more pleased with it. “It’s colossal,” he nods. Their producer Jerry Bruckheimer backs them both up. “I thought it was brilliant,” he declares. “I loved it. It was just amazing.”

Typical. Hollywood types giving themselves a big pat on the back. Actually, no. They’re not talking about Prince Of Persia. They’re talking about the movie that everyone’s (still) talking about. Read the rest of this entry »

Patrick Swayze: Peaceful Warrior

Posted by Jonathan On December - 5 - 2009

patrick swayzeRemembering an actor with all the right moves…

They bullied Patrick Wayne Swayze at school. While other young Texas dudes were shotgunning beers and swapping punches, he was perfecting his brisé and chassé. “I had to fight my way up from the days I was little,” remembers Swayze, who was shoved face-first into ballet by his mother, a dance tutor who would choreograph Urban Cowboy. As soon as he could walk, Swayze could dance. And the bullies learnt fast - he could do beer and bruises too. Read the rest of this entry »

Terry Gilliam: The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus

Posted by Jonathan On November - 22 - 2009

terry-gilliamHeath Ledger is dead. He’s hanging from a noose under a London bridge. And Terry Gilliam put him there.

That shocking first glimpse of the 27-year-old actor’s last ever screen appearance in Gilliam’s The Imaginarium Of Doctor Parnassus sent a shiver of electricity through the air when the film debuted at Cannes 2009. Of course, Ledger was very much alive when Gilliam shot the scene – as was Parnassus itself. Read the rest of this entry »

Film review: Funny People

Posted by Jonathan On August - 28 - 2009

funny-peopleHaving sex and kids were the jutting funny bones of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up, but for his third film as director, Hollywood powerhouse Judd Apatow completes an oddball trilogy-of-life with a serious comedy about death.

It’s Apatow’s richest, riskiest movie yet – and his most personal. Read the rest of this entry »

Bryan Singer: Magneto and Supes 2?

Posted by Jonathan On June - 3 - 2009

bryansingerSomeone broke Bryan Singer’s heart. He was 16, just a boy from New Jersey. They were much older, from way out of town. He still hasn’t recovered. He still hasn’t forgotten. “Maybe because I was an only child and I was always looking for that kind of thing,” he remembers. “I was completely blown away by ET. Absolute genius…” Read the rest of this entry »
